About Belton
Bell County and its county seat, Belton, were both named in honor of Peter Bell, who was the governor of Texas when the county was formed and the town of Nolandville was renamed to Belton in 1851. Nolandville had been platted one year earlier, and it was still the only town in Bell County at the time of Belton’s incorporation in 1852.
By the 1870s, Belton had grown significantly. Many two-story buildings, most of them utilizing native stone, were built. New businesses and entrepreneurs arrived, and a telegraph connection provided the area’s numerous cotton farmers with daily market quotes. The town’s population had grown to almost 1,800 by 1880.
In 1881, Belton suffered a setback. In an effort to bring the railroad to Belton, city fathers put up $75,000 and made other concessions to Santa Fe representatives. However, Santa Fe backed out of the deal, choosing to found its own town in the area, which they named Temple. The city sued, but it took many years before the case was finally decided in Belton’s favor. While the case made its way through the courts, Belton signed a contract with the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad and completed a depot in 1882. The arrival of the railroad fueled further growth, and by 1900, approximately 3,700 people resided in Belton.
Today, Belton has an estimated population of almost 21,000. Stillhouse Hollow Lake and Belton Lake are popular destinations for outdoor recreational activities, while the Bell County Expo Center hosts a variety of sporting events and concerts. Many residents commute to jobs in Waco, 42 miles away, but others commute 16 miles to Killeen or Fort Hood.
