New Braunfels, TX – The History
The modern history of New Braunfels began in 1845 with the arrival of Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, a German nobleman who named the new settlement after his home. He was an important member of the Mainzer Adelsverein, an organization that planned to create a “new Germany” in what was then the Republic of Texas. In December 1844, the first German settlers arrived in Indianola and began traveling overland to a more distant site, but realizing that if they continued their journey, they would not have enough time to harvest crops and build homes before the arrival of winter, they chose to settle near what became New Braunfels.
Despite financial issues and a change in leadership, the colony thrived. By 1850, the population of New Braunfels was 1,723, making it the state’s fourth most-populous city, surpassed only by Galveston, Houston and San Antonio. The censuses for 1880 and 1890 showed slight declines in population, but since 1900, the population has shown a significant increase with every new census.
