Taylor’s beginnings can be traced to an auction for lots held in 1876 after the anticipated route of the International-Great Northern Railroad was announced. The town was originally named Taylorsville in honor of a railroad official, assuming its current name in 1892. The arrival of the railroad made Taylor a bustling shipping point for cotton, grain and cattle. By 1878, there were 32 businesses and 1,000 residents in Taylor. Growth was boosted by the arrival of the Taylor, Bastrop and Houston Railway in 1882. The population of Taylor exceeded 4,200 people by 1900, 9,000 people by 1950 and 15,100 people by 2010.
